You're inside the capital, the beach is a ten-minute drive from a UNESCO World Heritage centre, not an hour from anywhere. Punda and Otrobanda's candy-coloured Dutch façades, the floating Queen Emma bridge, the floating market and the museums are all an easy afternoon out.
Pietermaai, the restored waterfront district, has the island's best independent restaurants and bars when you want something different from the boulevard.
Bapor Kibrá
The area is still known locally as Bapor Kibrá: Papiamentu (the local language) for "broken ship," after the wreck that lies just offshore and remains a favourite dive site today.For most of the last century this was a quiet stretch of rocky coast. The Curaçao Sea Aquarium opened next door in the 1980s, and the beach — an engineered one, with breakwaters shaping the bay into a calm lagoon — took the name Sea Aquarium Beach.The Mambo Beach Boulevard came later: a two-level open-air promenade of more than 50 shops, restaurants and beach clubs set directly behind the sand, turning a good beach into the island's main gathering place.
